Business activities and traffic were disrupted in Enugu on Wednesday as commercial transporters and traders protested against what they described as high taxes and rising fuel prices.
The protesters, including tricycle operators, minibus drivers and traders, blocked parts of the Ogbete Main Market, Old Park and Holy Ghost areas.
The operators alleged that daily levies had increased significantly in recent months, adding to the pressure caused by rising fuel costs.
A commercial driver, Michael Chieze, said transporters were paying daily tickets, park fees and other charges, while petrol was selling for about N1,450 per litre.
The protest comes despite the state government’s defence of its tax reforms. The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service said the reforms had increased revenue from the informal sector and were designed to consolidate multiple levies and eliminate illegal collections.
Police and government officials were deployed to the affected areas as authorities engaged the protesters and worked to restore normal activities.
