The Federal Government has commissioned a 3MW solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, to improve electricity supply for teaching, research, laboratories and other critical campus operations.

The project was delivered under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency and the World Bank-funded Nigeria Electrification Project.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the facility comprises a 3.3MW solar array, 3MW AC output capacity and 2MWh battery storage to provide power beyond daylight hours.

The project also includes 388 solar-powered streetlights to improve campus lighting and security.

Tegbe said the government was considering extending electricity supply to student hostels and other areas of the university, with the aim of covering the remaining areas within six months.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, said the Energising Education Programme had provided renewable energy infrastructure to 22 federal universities and three affiliated teaching hospitals, with more than 100MW of clean energy deployed.

He urged the university to use the facility as a platform for research into renewable energy, battery storage, grid integration and energy management.

The government also called on the university community to protect the infrastructure from vandalism and ensure its sustainability.
