President Bola Tinubu has directed the release of all approved funds to Nigeria’s regional development commissions to support development projects across the country.
Tinubu gave the directive on Monday at the North Central Development Commission Summit, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The President said the commissions were established to accelerate development and should receive the necessary political and financial support to deliver major projects.
He urged the commissions to also seek funding through public-private partnerships, donor agencies and development financing.
Tinubu said their priorities should include infrastructure, industrialisation, security, education, healthcare, investment and human capital development.
He also warned the commissions against corruption, politicisation and misuse of public funds, stressing that anyone found culpable would be sanctioned.
The President said the North Central Development Commission should complement, rather than duplicate, the functions of state and local governments and other federal institutions.
Nasarawa State Governor and Chairman of the North Central Governors’ Forum, Abdullahi Sule, called for greater investment in processing agricultural and mineral resources within the region to create jobs and boost economic growth.
