The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Ogechi Ofoma, for allegedly inflicting severe injuries on her seven-year-old daughter in Ibollo community, Awada-Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The child, identified as Oluebube, was allegedly injured with a hot knife following an accusation that she took meat from a cooking pot.
Police said the child was rescued after community security personnel and residents intervened, leading to the woman’s arrest on Sunday.
The suspect is currently in police custody at Awada Police Station as investigations continue.
The police said they are working with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure the child receives medical care and necessary protection.
The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, condemned the alleged abuse and warned that anyone found responsible for violating the rights of children would face the law.
