The United Kingdom’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to begin his diplomatic assignment.

Vowles succeeds Richard Montgomery, who previously served as the UK High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Speaking after his arrival, Vowles said his immediate priority was to listen, learn and engage with Nigerians as he settles into his new role.

He said the UK and Nigeria have a strong and enduring relationship built on close ties between their people, adding that he looked forward to working with partners across the country to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Vowles was announced as the UK’s next High Commissioner to Nigeria in June 2026. He previously served as Britain’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe and Myanmar and held diplomatic and development positions in several countries, including India, Bangladesh, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

His arrival comes as Nigeria and the UK continue to maintain strong diplomatic, economic, security and development relations.
