The Nigerian Navy has arrested 12 people over an alleged illegal recruitment and training scheme in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The suspects include six alleged organisers, five trainees and one cadet of the Merchant Seaman Academy.
The Navy said the arrests followed intelligence on the activities of a purported Nigeria Coast Guard Academy at Uwa West, Essien Udim.
The operation was carried out on August 31 by the Nigerian Navy in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
According to the Navy, the recruitment and training exercise was not authorised or recognised under Nigerian law, raising concerns that members of the public could be deceived into the scheme.
The suspects have been handed over to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for further investigation and possible legal action.
The Navy advised Nigerians to verify recruitment offers from purported security, maritime and military organisations through appropriate government channels before paying money or providing personal information.
