Resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have raised concerns over manpower shortages at the hospital, warning that the situation could affect specialist training, healthcare delivery and patient care.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors called on the Oyo State Government to urgently address the manpower, welfare and working-condition challenges facing doctors at the institution.

NARD said several resident doctors had left the hospital in recent months without replacement, while doctors who completed their residency training were also not replaced. It noted that critical specialties, including Anaesthesia, Chemical Pathology and Haematology, were reportedly without resident doctors.

The association also demanded the payment of outstanding minimum wage arrears, promotion and accoutrement allowance arrears, implementation of the new professional allowance for doctors and release of the Medical Residency Training Fund.

NARD further called for the renovation of call rooms and on-call facilities, as well as the enforcement of appropriate work-hour regulations to reduce excessive duty schedules and burnout.

The association recalled that the Association of Resident Doctors, LAUTECH, suspended its industrial action on June 27, 2026, after being granted an eight-week period for the authorities to address the issues raised.

NARD urged the Oyo State Government to engage with the resident doctors and resolve the outstanding concerns before the expiration of the ultimatum on Friday, August 28, warning that failure to act could further undermine specialist training and healthcare delivery at the hospital.
