Grief hung over Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday as veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was laid to rest.
His remains, wrapped in white cloth in accordance with Islamic rites, were received by family, friends, and colleagues, including fellow industry veterans such as Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, and Ireti Osayemi, as an Islamic cleric led prayers for the departed.
Ogogo passed away on Sunday, August 23, at the age of 66, after a battle with stage-four cancer.
His family had appealed publicly for support in his final weeks, and his daughter, Kira Taiwo, had disclosed that doctors could no longer continue his chemotherapy given his condition.
The senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, was among those who stepped in once Ogogo’s diagnosis became public, reportedly connecting the actor with cancer specialists and supporting his family through treatment.
In a condolence statement, Governor Dapo Abiodun commended Yayi for “doing everything possible to support his recovery.”
Tributes have poured in from across the political and entertainment spectrum.
Abiodun described Ogogo as a cultural icon whose career “brought joy to millions.”
Also, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar praised him as an actor who used his craft “to educate and inspire,” while activist Omoyele Sowore also honoured his contribution to Yoruba cinema.
The burial prayer was held at 10 a.m. at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground, followed by a lying-in-state ceremony.
Ogogo’s career spanned more than four decades and over 300 films.
