Stop Recruiting Youths for Election Violence

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Henry Ndukuba, has condemned the recruitment of youths by politicians to perpetrate electoral violence.

Ndukuba said politicians should not use young Nigerians as tools for intimidation and violence during elections, noting that their own children are often protected from such dangers.

His comments come ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid concerns over rising political violence in parts of the country.

Osun State, which will hold its governorship election on August 15, has already recorded incidents of violence involving supporters of political parties, with about 30 deaths reportedly linked to the pre-election period.

Ndukuba urged political leaders to pursue peaceful elections and stop exposing young people to violence for political gains.

He said youths should recognise the power of their numbers and use their votes to influence political outcomes rather than allowing themselves to be recruited as political thugs.

The cleric also called on security agencies, electoral officials and other institutions to remain professional and impartial in protecting voters and ensuring credible elections.

He urged young Nigerians to reject monetary inducements from politicians and demand accountability through the ballot box.

“Do not sell your future for a politician’s handout,” he said.
