The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olapegba as the institution’s 14th substantive Vice Chancellor.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday following the conclusion of the university’s vice chancellor selection process.
In a statement, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Bisi Akande, said Professor Olapegba emerged as the successful candidate after a rigorous and transparent selection exercise.
Akande explained that although six applications were initially received, two additional applications were submitted, bringing the total number of candidates to eight.
He said the Governing Council interacted with all eight applicants on Tuesday before the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board shortlisted five candidates for the final stage of the selection process on Wednesday.
According to him, Professor Olapegba emerged as the best candidate after what he described as a thorough, transparent and highly competitive exercise.
Professor Olapegba currently serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Ibadan and is a professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences.
He is expected to assume office as Vice Chancellor on December 1, 2026.
He was selected ahead of other contenders, including Professor Adeyinka Aderinto of the Department of Sociology and Professor Adebola Ekanola of the Faculty of Arts, who previously served as the university’s Acting Vice Chancellor.
