President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Oleh Establishment Bill, paving the way for the creation of the first federal tertiary healthcare institution in Delta South Senatorial District.
The legislation, sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, is expected to strengthen access to specialised healthcare services in the oil-producing region, which has long lacked a federal medical facility.
Reacting to the development, Senator Joel-Onowakpo described the President’s assent as a landmark achievement for the people of Delta South, saying it represents a significant step toward addressing longstanding gaps in healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the bill, noting that the establishment of the medical centre would improve access to quality medical care for millions of residents and reduce the burden of travelling long distances for specialised treatment.
According to the lawmaker, the new Federal Medical Centre will provide advanced healthcare services while supporting the overall well-being of communities that have faced years of environmental and health challenges associated with crude oil exploration.
Joel-Onowakpo also commended the leadership of the National Assembly and lawmakers who supported the passage of the bill, describing the collaborative effort as instrumental to the successful establishment of the institution.
He further appreciated traditional and community stakeholders who contributed to the campaign for the project, saying their support helped make the initiative a reality.
The senator congratulated the people of Delta South, describing the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre in Oleh as a major milestone in the region’s development. He added that the project reflects the impact of effective representation and reaffirmed his commitment to attracting more federal projects that will enhance healthcare, infrastructure and economic development across the senatorial district.
The signing of the Federal Medical Centre, Oleh Establishment Act adds to recent legislative achievements aimed at expanding federal presence and improving public services in Delta South.
