The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting local production and supporting Nigeria’s economy.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the new uniform will be produced entirely in Nigeria, noting that Adire is widely manufactured across the country, with strong production hubs in states such as Ogun and Kwara.
According to the minister, the initiative is intended to channel government spending towards indigenous industries, strengthen the local textile sector, and create more opportunities for Nigerian artisans and manufacturers.
Olawande explained that the reform aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy of encouraging the patronage of locally made products while stimulating economic growth through increased domestic production.
The proposed uniform change forms part of a wider reform of the NYSC scheme, which also includes plans to improve the corps members’ deployment process by ensuring postings are aligned with their academic qualifications and professional skills.
