Akpabio Warns Governors Against Misusing State Police Powers

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned state governors against abusing the powers of state police when the proposed security structure becomes operational.

Akpabio gave the warning during plenary on Tuesday as the National Assembly moved closer to approving the establishment of state police as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

He stressed that adequate safeguards must be put in place to prevent the misuse of state police by political office holders, noting that governors would eventually leave office and could become subject to the same system they helped create.

According to him, the establishment of state police marks a significant step in Nigeria’s democratic and security evolution, as the country has operated a centralized policing system since independence.

Akpabio explained that the implementation process would be carried out in two stages. The first involves amendments to the Constitution, while the second would be the enactment of legislation outlining operational guidelines and mechanisms to prevent abuse.

The Senate is expected to consider and pass the state police bill as part of ongoing constitutional reform efforts aimed at strengthening security across the federation.
