Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Yinka Alaseyori, has publicly apologised following backlash over her comments on the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
The controversy stemmed from remarks she made while reacting to the abduction of students and teachers from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The victims were kidnapped during an attack on the school on May 15, 2026. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns about insecurity in schools across the country.
In a video shared earlier, Alaseyori urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu, security agencies and affected families with prayers, expressing hope that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the abducted victims.
However, her comments attracted criticism from many Nigerians, including public figures, who argued that the worsening security situation requires urgent and decisive government action rather than relying solely on religious appeals.
Responding to the criticism in a new video released on Wednesday, the gospel singer apologised to Nigerians, particularly families affected by the tragedy, stating that she never intended to appear insensitive to their pain.
According to her, the video that generated public outrage was only a portion of a much longer message in which she prayed for the kidnapped children, grieving families, government agencies, security personnel and the nation.
She explained that the viral clip did not fully reflect the context of her message and expressed regret that some people felt ignored or misunderstood.
Alaseyori appealed to parents and concerned Nigerians to forgive her if her comments came across as insensitive, reiterating her sympathy for the victims and their families.
The singer maintained that her intention was to offer support through prayers while standing in solidarity with those affected by the abduction.
