The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has issued a clarification on the official appellation of President Bola Tinubu following what it described as recurring errors by some organisations and media outlets.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Yomi Odunuga.
According to the statement, the clarification was personally approved and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Akume urged members of the public, media organisations and institutions to ensure proper verification of official titles before publication in order to avoid what he described as embarrassing and avoidable mistakes.
The SGF stated that the correct and official appellation of the President is:
“His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The statement further advised media organisations and members of the public to make use of the official communication channels of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for verification and clarification where necessary.
According to Odunuga, the clarification became necessary after an error was observed in the naming and official designation of the President in a publication by a national newspaper on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
He explained that the SGF noted that such lapses could easily be avoided through proper confirmation from relevant government channels before publication.
The statement stressed the importance of accuracy and professionalism in official communication, especially in matters involving state protocol and the office of the President.
It also reaffirmed the commitment of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to ensuring proper dissemination of official information to the public and the media.
