Tension has risen in Okudjere-Ovu Community, located in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, following an incident in which a team of police officers from the Orerokpe Division allegedly shot an unarmed resident.

The shooting reportedly took place on Thursday evening after the officers, said to be working alongside anti-cult operatives, stopped the individual on suspicion of possessing hard drugs. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the situation escalated quickly, leading to the victim being shot in the right leg.

Footage circulating from the scene captured the aftermath, showing bystanders and sympathizers rushing to assist the घायल victim while the officers involved reportedly fled the area. Their withdrawal was believed to be prompted by fears of a possible backlash from angry youths who had begun gathering at the scene.

The incident has sparked outrage among community members and civil society groups, who have expressed deep concern over what they describe as excessive use of force and disregard for human rights. A prominent advocacy group, Initiative For Social Rights Concerns And Advancements (ISRCA), also known as “No Justice, No Peace,” strongly condemned the action, describing it as both unjustified and troubling.

In a statement, the group emphasized that law enforcement officers are entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding lives and maintaining order, not inflicting harm on citizens, particularly in situations that do not appear to warrant lethal or violent intervention. The organization called for urgent accountability, stressing that such actions erode public trust in security institutions.

The group’s National Coordinator, Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, urged authorities to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. He specifically called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police to identify the officers involved and ensure they are held responsible if found culpable.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from the police authorities regarding the incident. Meanwhile, residents of the affected community remain anxious, with many demanding justice and assurances that similar occurrences will not happen again.
