The Delta State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against one of its officers following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect during an operation in Effurun.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved a suspect identified as Mene Ogidi, who was allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel believed to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, operatives were deployed to apprehend the suspect based on intelligence reports. However, the operation turned fatal when the officer in charge, Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of established procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Command described the shooting as a breach of operational guidelines and reiterated its zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the immediate arrest of the officer. He was initially taken to the State Police Headquarters in Asaba before being transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
Police authorities confirmed that the officer will face disciplinary നടപടions and possible prosecution as the investigation continues.
The Command also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice would be served, urging residents to remain calm while the process unfolds.
