Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday declared his support for his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred candidate to succeed him in the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat officially informed the governor and members of the State Executive Council, along with key party stakeholders, of his intention to contest the governorship seat.
The meeting was attended by members of the Governor’s Advisory Council and other political leaders in the state.
Speaking after the session, Sanwo-Olu said the decision to back Hamzat was collectively reached by stakeholders present, describing the deputy governor as well-prepared and capable of leading the state.
He noted that Hamzat had worked closely with him over the past seven years and praised his experience, integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance.
The governor also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, crediting him with playing a role in shaping the leadership relationship within the state.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the meeting reflected broad consultation within the party structure, adding that stakeholders were aligned in their support for Hamzat’s aspiration.
He further described the deputy governor as someone who understands the workings of government and is fully prepared to assume higher responsibility, should the opportunity arise.
The development signals early political positioning within the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos State as preparations gradually build ahead of the 2027 elections.
