One person has been confirmed dead and another is missing after a wild elephant attacked residents in Innayin Community, Oyo State.
The incident occurred at about 3:30 pm on Thursday when the animal suddenly appeared in the area, causing panic among residents.
Security operatives, working alongside local vigilantes and hunters, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. On arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of a 45-year-old man, Ibrahim Tijani, in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack.
His remains have been taken to the General Hospital in Iwere-Ile for examination and preservation.
Meanwhile, another resident, 50-year-old Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, has been declared missing following an encounter with the elephant. Search efforts are ongoing to locate him.
Authorities have since deployed personnel to the community to manage the situation and prevent further casualties.
Residents of Innayin and surrounding communities have been advised to remain calm, stay away from the affected area, and report any sighting of the animal.
Officials also noted that relevant agencies are being engaged to ensure the situation is handled safely and in line with wildlife conservation regulations.
Security authorities reassured the public that efforts are ongoing to secure the area, urging continued cooperation from residents as operations continue.
