A dispatch rider has lost his life in a fatal road accident in the Motorways Inward Estate area of Alapere after a collision with a tanker.
The incident involved an empty tanker belonging to NIPCO, which reportedly rammed into the moving motorcycle. Preliminary findings indicate that the tanker driver was allegedly speeding at the time of the crash, leading to the violent impact that resulted in the rider’s instant death.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority responded promptly to the scene, moving quickly to manage the situation and prevent further escalation. Tensions reportedly rose shortly after the accident, as a group of fellow dispatch riders gathered and confronted the tanker driver in reaction to the fatal incident.
LASTMA personnel intervened swiftly, maintaining order and ensuring the situation did not spiral into chaos. The officials were able to rescue the tanker driver from the agitated crowd, demonstrating restraint and professionalism in the face of mounting tension.
The injured driver, who sustained serious injuries during the confrontation, was handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical attention and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Operatives from the Nigeria Police Force were also deployed to the scene to restore calm, disperse onlookers, and secure the area while preliminary investigations commenced.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased dispatch rider, describing the loss as tragic and avoidable. He emphasised the importance of responsible driving, particularly among operators of heavy-duty vehicles such as tankers.
He warned motorists against excessive speed and reckless behaviour on the roads, noting that such actions continue to be major contributors to road accidents and fatalities across the state. He further urged all road users to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and prioritise the safety of others at all times.
Authorities confirmed that the tanker and the damaged motorcycle have been taken into custody for further examination, while investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
