A 300-level student of the University of Ibadan has died after reportedly ingesting a substance suspected to be an insecticide.
The incident occurred on Sunday night at Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall within the university. The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found on the ground floor of the hostel in an unconscious and distressed condition by another student.
It was gathered that he allegedly admitted to taking a substance identified as “Sniper,” a commonly known insecticide brand. He was immediately rushed to the university’s health centre, where medical personnel worked to stabilise him.
Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where he was placed on life support. Despite medical efforts to save him, he later passed away.
The Public Relations Officer of UCH, Funmi Adetuyibi, confirmed that the student was brought to the hospital and later died.
The incident has sparked concern within the university community as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
