The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, has called for deeper collaboration between the Nigerian Army and traditional institutions to enhance ongoing military operations across the country.
General Shaibu made the appeal during a courtesy visit on Thursday to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, at his palace.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Army spokesperson, Colonel Apollonia Anele, the COAS expressed profound appreciation to the monarch and the Lagos traditional council for their consistent support to the Nigerian Army. He stated that his visit was not only to convey his gratitude, but also to seek the blessings of the royal father, noting that Nigeria’s customs and traditions remain essential and must always be honoured.
General Shaibu commended Oba Akiolu for his long-standing fatherly role in supporting Army formations and institutions across Lagos State. He described the monarch’s guidance and goodwill as invaluable to the Army’s operational effectiveness and civil–military cooperation efforts.
In his response, Oba Akiolu praised the Nigerian Army for its steadfast commitment to safeguarding the nation and maintaining peace. He described the military as a vital pillar of national stability, noting that the professionalism and sacrifices of its personnel continue to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s unity.
The monarch also commended the COAS for his focused leadership and dedication to ensuring peace and security across the country. He offered special prayers for sustained peace in Nigeria and for General Shaibu’s successful tenure.
According to the Army statement, the visit underscores the military’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with traditional institutions, which remain key stakeholders in the nation’s peace and security architecture.
