The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday formally opened its 2025 Elective National Convention, tagged #Ibadan2025, at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan.
The convention, which spans November 15–16, drew a massive turnout of party delegates and stakeholders from across the country. More than 3,000 delegates, including governors, members of the National Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, and other key party leaders, arrived in Ibadan to participate in the highly anticipated event.
In a statement issued through the party’s official channels, the PDP described the gathering as a “historic moment” for the opposition party as it prepares to elect a new leadership team. The exercise will produce a fresh National Working Committee, including a new National Chairman, who will be responsible for repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This year’s convention comes after weeks of intense internal disagreements, factional tensions, and attempts by certain interests to halt the event through institutional and legal interventions. Despite the political hurdles, the convention proceeded as scheduled, marking a significant step forward for party unity.
Party insiders praised Ibadan for its readiness and modern infrastructure, noting that the city’s facilities made it an ideal host. The convention location also stirred nostalgia, with many recalling the PDP’s landmark 1998 convention in Jos, which laid the foundation for the party’s rise.
Activities at the venue are expected to continue throughout the weekend, with more updates anticipated as the convention progresses and voting begins.
