Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, has denied claims that he married his wife, Regina Daniels, when she was 17 years old.
In a detailed statement released via his official social media account, the lawmaker described the allegations as false, malicious, and misleading, insisting that Regina was 21 years old at the time of their marriage.
According to Nwoko, his first meeting with Regina included a discussion about her age, during which she presented a valid identification document to confirm her date of birth.
“It has come to my attention that false claims are being circulated by Regina, suggesting that I married her when she was 17 years old. These claims are entirely untrue and misleading,” Nwoko stated.
He explained that during their initial conversation, Regina told him she was 21 years old and provided her Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter’s card as proof, showing October 10, 1998, as her date of birth.
“I asked her age and she said she was 21. I further asked if she had any document to support this, and she presented her INEC voter’s card, which clearly shows that she was born on October 10, 1998. I informed her that I would keep the document in my possession, and I have done so since that day,” he said.
The senator added that his account was consistent with an interview previously granted by Regina’s mother, which, according to him, confirmed that her daughter was of age at the time of marriage.
“I have also seen an interview her mother granted shortly after our marriage that aligns with the facts of her age,” he noted.
Nwoko urged members of the public to disregard what he described as fabricated narratives being spread online, emphasizing that their marriage took place six years ago, which would make Regina 27 years old today.
“According to all verifiable records, our marriage took place six years ago, which means Regina is 27 years old today. Any suggestion that I married her at 17 is false and should not be accepted by the public,” the senator said.
He also urged Nigerians to treat recent claims attributed to Regina with caution, alluding to concerns about her mental health and personal struggles.
“The facts are verifiable and indisputable. Until these are examined, I urge the public to approach all her claims with caution and discernment, especially in view of her current mental condition, having started and abandoned her rehabilitation from drug addiction,” he added.
Nwoko reiterated that his marriage to Regina Daniels was lawful and transparent, and that all allegations suggesting otherwise were attempts to damage his reputation and family.
