No fewer than 14 candidates contesting various positions in the upcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council election, have signed a peace accord to ensure a smooth and credible poll.
The signing ceremony took place on Sunday in Ibadan, where candidates pledged to uphold peace and fairness throughout the electoral process.
The event was witnessed by key stakeholders, including the representative of the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, ACP Coker Shado; former NUJ Chairman, Alhaji Soladoye Adewole; and the outgoing Chairman, Ademola Babalola.
The election is scheduled for December 9, 2025, with executive positions to be contested including Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Internal Auditor.
Chairman of the Credentials Screening Committee, Ismail Fasasi, said the peace accord was vital to guarantee a free, fair, and transparent election.
He appealed to all candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, emphasizing that the election should reflect the union’s values of integrity and professionalism.
“I urge all stakeholders to abide by the principles of the peace accord and promote an atmosphere that allows members to exercise their rights without fear or intimidation,” Fasasi stated.
Fourteen of the fifteen cleared candidates signed the agreement, while one candidate was absent at the event.
