Police operatives in Anambra State have arrested a 23-year-old woman, identified as Okonkwo Onyinye, for her alleged involvement in the kidnapping and robbery of a businessman who was dispossessed of ₦24 million and his Toyota Highlander SUV in the Nkwelle-Ezunaka area of Idemili North Local Government Area.
The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of October 27, 2025, following a joint operation by officers of the 3-3 Police Division and members of the Agunechemba Security Outfit, Nkwelle-Ezunaka Unit.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, noting that the operation led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle and that efforts were underway to apprehend other members of the gang still at large.
“Anambra State Police Command operatives attached to the 3-3 Police Station, in collaboration with Agunechemba Security, Nkwelle-Ezunaka Unit, arrested one Okonkwo Onyinye, aged 23, a female accomplice in a reported case of armed robbery and kidnapping,” Ikenga said.
“The team also recovered a white Toyota Highlander SUV belonging to the victim, with registration number RBC 649 CN, which had been snatched by the suspects.”
According to the police statement, the victim was waylaid by five armed men operating in a Toyota Corolla at Nkwelle GRA Gate. The attackers reportedly forced him into the boot of his vehicle and drove him to a bush in Umuoji Town, where they dispossessed him of his mobile phone and transferred ₦24 million from his account before abandoning him and fleeing with the SUV.
Following the report of the incident, a joint police and vigilante team, using intelligence-led tracking, traced the movement of the suspects to Nawfia and later to Ogidi, where they engaged the security operatives in sporadic gunfire. The assailants eventually fled the scene, leaving the stolen vehicle behind.
Ikenga said the recovered SUV was immediately taken into police custody while the female suspect, who was found at the scene, was arrested and is currently providing useful information to investigators.
“She is assisting police detectives with credible information that will lead to the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang,” Ikenga added.
The police spokesperson further assured that the Anambra State Police Command had intensified patrols across the state ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, as part of efforts to maintain public safety and curb criminal activities.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
