Traditional rulers from across Northern Nigeria have converged in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, for a two-day meeting aimed at addressing the worsening insecurity and other pressing challenges confronting the region.
Led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the meeting is being held under the umbrella of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC). It was declared open today by Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, with the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, serving as host.
The gathering brings together prominent royal figures who arrived in the state on Monday, ahead of the formal opening. Upon arrival, some of the traditional leaders paid courtesy visits to their counterparts already in town, reinforcing ties among the northern emirates.
The discussions are expected to focus on insecurity, particularly in the North West, where communities continue to face persistent threats from banditry, kidnappings, and other violent crimes. Other socio-economic issues affecting the region, including poverty, education, and unemployment, are also on the agenda.
The council aims to present actionable recommendations that will complement government efforts and strengthen collaboration between traditional institutions and public authorities. The meeting continues tomorrow.
