The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify security operations in Kebe and Tambuwal Local Government Areas of Sokoto State following a surge in deadly bandit attacks that have claimed lives and displaced numerous residents.
The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion of urgent national importance was moved by Hon. Abdushama Dasuki, who represents the Kebe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency.
In presenting the motion, Dasuki raised alarm over the persistent attacks by armed bandits in his constituency. He recounted recent incidents in August where communities such as Toku, Sengi, and Ongushi in Kebe LGA were attacked, resulting in multiple deaths, abductions, and livestock theft. Similar violence was reported in Jabu Kagara and other parts of Tambuwal LGA.
The lawmaker highlighted the far-reaching impact of the insecurity, noting that residents have fled their homes, schools have been shut down, and many farmers have abandoned their land, deepening poverty in the area.
He further warned that the fragile diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Niger Republic have increased the vulnerability of Sokoto’s border communities to cross-border banditry and arms trafficking.
Dasuki called for a more coordinated, intelligence-led approach to protect lives and property, especially in rural and border areas.
Adopting the motion, the House directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, and other security agencies to immediately reinforce operations in the affected local governments.
Additionally, the House mandated its Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, and Police Affairs to liaise with relevant agencies to ensure effective implementation and report back within two weeks.
