The University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday fully joined the nationwide two-week warning strike, effectively halting all academic and administrative activities on campus.
Lecture halls and offices across the university were shut, with a noticeable drop in student and staff movement. Students, having been notified in advance, mostly stayed indoors as the university adjusted to the industrial action.
Confirming the development, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, chairman of the UI ASUU chapter, stated that the strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will remain in force until further directives are received from the union’s national leadership.
“There is full compliance with the directive from our national body,” Afolabi said, adding that a monitoring team had been deployed to faculties and departments to ensure adherence. “No academic or related activity is taking place on campus at the moment.”
ASUU’s national president, Prof. Chris Piwuna, had on Sunday declared the warning strike during a press conference in Abuja, citing the Federal Government’s continued failure to meet the union’s demands. The two-week industrial action, which began on Monday, October 13, 2025, is described as total and comprehensive.
Piwuna stated that the decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government on September 28. He warned that failure to meet the union’s demands within the warning period could lead to a full-blown nationwide strike.
