President Bola Tinubu has presented Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 to October 2025.

The presentation took place during a meeting of the National Council of State, where Amupitan, from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, became the first person from the state and the North-Central region to be presented for the position.

President Tinubu described Amupitan as an apolitical individual with a strong reputation for integrity. The Council unanimously supported the presentation. His name will now be sent to the Senate for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional requirements.

Amupitan, 58, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos and serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). He specialises in Company Law, Evidence Law, Corporate Governance, and Privatisation Law, and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014.

An alumnus of the University of Jos, he holds an LLM and a PhD. His academic career began in 1989 after completing his National Youth Service.

He has held several leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Law, Head of Public Law Department, and Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors. He is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University.

Amupitan has served on various boards and authored several legal textbooks on corporate governance and evidence law.
