The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed seized fake, expired, substandard and falsified drugs valued at ₦15 billion in Ibadan, the state capital.
The destruction exercise, necessitated by the threat of reintroduction into circulation, was overseen by NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and represented by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation & Enforcement.
As chair of the Federal Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that all regulated products — including food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and drinks — are safe, wholesome and effective.
The items destroyed included expired, counterfeit, unregistered, banned and uncontrolled drugs such as Analgin, Cocodamol, codeine cough syrups, Tramadol, Oxytocin, and various vaccines. The total street value of these products was estimated to be ₦15 billion.
Adeyeye noted that this operation will help eliminate the risk of these harmful products being reintroduced into the Nigerian market.
In his remarks, SK Tijani, representing the Nigeria Customs Service, underscored the synergy between Customs and NAFDAC in tackling fake, expired, substandard and unwholesome drugs nationwide.
