In his address at the unveiling ceremony, the special adviser to the Lagos State Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Babatunde Olajide said the digital house address system, also known as the Lagos Identifier Programme, which would formally become operational by July 1, adding that it would help in different sectors including housing, transportation, e-cab hailing service, security, emergency response, taxation and planning.
He explained that the introduction of this technology has positioned Lagos as a smart state and would significantly impact both the daily lives of residents and the government’s ability to respond more effectively to their needs.
He said the project also aligns with broader federal ambitions for a digitally integrated Nigeria. It is expected to improve data collection, strengthen physical planning, and simplify property documentation processes.
Olajide said the pilot phase of the programme would begin in Ikeja Local Government Area, where state agencies, in collaboration with the technical partner, would generate and install digital house numbers.
He stated that the project cannot come at a better time, noting that if the Lagos State government gets it right, other states will use it as a case study to adopt.
He revealed that 23,000 properties in Ikeja would be included in the initial phase and that, upon completion, , the project would gradually extend to other local government areas. “We are advising all properties that have been subdivided to come forward for re-identification,” he added.
A technical partner, Mr Yinka Adesiyan, explained that every street and house would have its name and number embedded in bar codes, with various information accessible to residents by scanning the codes.
“This code will serve as a digital gateway to access location-specific information. With a simple scan, residents, delivery agents, and emergency services can pinpoint locations faster and more accurately,” Adesiyan said.
He further stated that the technology is in line with global trends in innovative city development and would place Lagos at the forefront of urban digital transformation.
