OBASANJO, SOYINKA, OTHER SCHOLARS REFLECT ON OLUNLOYO’S LIFE AND TIMES AS FUNERAL ACTIVITIES COMMENCE

It was a gathering of intellect, admiration, and deep reflections at the Requiem Symposium tagged “Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo: Legacy of Uncommon Brilliance”, organised by the Initiative for Information, Arts, and Culture Development in Nigeria.

The event drew dignitaries from various walks of life who came together to honour Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo,a man described as a walking encyclopedia, mathematical genius, and a political puzzle-master.

In his keynote address, Chairman of the occasion and former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, described the former Governor of Oyo State as more than just a scholar of books and brilliance. He said Olunloyo was a genius, one worth celebrating and remembering by all.

Adding an intellectual lens to the celebration of life, Nigerian historian and Professor of African Studies, Toyin Falola, who has received over 30 international honours, highlighted how Olunloyo used performative humour as a subtle but powerful tool in his political engagements.

Also speaking, award-winning columnist and political analyst, Dr. Lasisi Olagunju recalled Olunloyo’s unique use of logic and mathematical riddles particularly the famous “SAD BOY” puzzle to interpret and even predict political developments in Nigeria.

Paying his tribute to the incredible icon, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, described Olunloyo’s brilliance as “unmatched in the world”, reaffirming his status as one of Nigeria’s finest minds.

Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo was a Nigerian mathematician and politician who served as the Governor of Oyo State from October 1 to December 31, 1983. He passed away on the 6th of April, 2025, at the age of 89.
