Ahead of the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has secured the release of 222 inmates detained in correctional facilities across the state.
The inmates were detained due to their inability to pay fines imposed by courts for minor commercial and non-capital offenses.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Fadila Muhammad Dikko, conveyed the development in a statement. She said the decision follows recommendations to the state government to intervene in paying the outstanding fines for the selected inmates.
She explained that the beneficiaries were carefully selected after a thorough verification process.
According to Fadila, “The Governor’s benevolent act is expected to significantly reduce congestion in these facilities and enable the freed inmates to partake in the joyous occasion of Sallah with their loved ones.”
This comes as the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday.
It will be recalled that the federal government had earlier declared Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10 has public holiday for the Eid –el- Fitr celebration.
This was disclosed through a statement issued by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on Tuesday.
