The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU says it will ground activities in universities across the country if the withheld salaries of its members are not paid.

The union reacted after the chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed that the Federal Government has commenced payment for the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday.

The National President of SSANU, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, in an interview has expressed his dissatisfaction over the exclusion of the union from the payment of withheld salaries.

Following the approval of the release of the four of the eight months ASUU’s withheld salaries. Ibrahim stated that members of the union felt bad by the act of injustice demonstrated towards them after discovering that only ASUU’s payment was approved.

He also added that there is tension on all the campuses due exclusion of from the payment.

The union president has said continuous peace can’t be guaranteed in the universities if the government refuses to approve the withheld payment.

He disclosed that SSANU members would meet on Tuesday to take a decision on the development.

Also, National Vice-President, SSANU, Abdussobur Salaam, says “The Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU has exercised patience with the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu especially during the harsh economic conditions.

The union has attributed the untimely death of its members to the untold hardship in the country exacerbated by lecturers’ poor remuneration and unfavorable working conditions. A total of 46 academics lost their lives in universities under the Abuja zone.
