The Federal Government alongside the governments of the 36 states are considering the creation of state police.

This followed an emergency meeting between President Tinubu and state governors at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday which follows the recent hike in food prices, economic hardship, and pockets of insecurity recorded nationwide.

While addressing newsmen, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained that the process is still in its infancy, adding that the federal and state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police.

He noted that the debate for the creation of state police primarily stems from the centralized nature of the Nigerian Police Force and the unique security challenges across the country .

Proponents argue that the sector would bring law enforcement closer to the communities they serve, enhance the effectiveness of policing.

However, those who are against the idea fear that state police could lead to abuse of power, particularly in states with strong political control, potentially exacerbating regional tensions and undermining national unity.

The minister also revealed that the government will recruit a yet-to-be-disclosed number for training so that they can be effective in keeping the borders of the country safe.
