Workers in the Federal Capital Territory have commenced an indefinite strike over the welfare and career progression of teachers under the FCT Administration.
The FCT Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) began the strike on Wednesday following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Administration. The union directed workers in public and private sectors, including schools, hospitals, government offices and other establishments, to withdraw their services until its demands are addressed.
The dispute centres on the FCTA’s vacancy clause, which makes teachers’ promotion subject to the availability of vacancies. The NLC said the policy has caused prolonged career stagnation and demoralisation among teachers, arguing that those employed by the FCT Universal Basic Education Board and Secondary Education Board should be promoted when due.
The union is also demanding that teachers eligible for promotion in 2025 be allowed to take their promotion examinations alongside or before the 2026 candidates. Other demands include the reversal of some redeployment and demotion letters and the dissolution and reconstitution of the management teams of the FCT SEB and UBEB.
