Contractors Risk EFCC Action Over Abandoned Projects – FG

The Federal Government has warned contractors who collect mobilisation funds for federal projects but fail to return to construction sites that they risk prosecution and recovery of the funds.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, issued the warning on Wednesday in Abuja, saying the government would no longer tolerate contractors sitting on public funds or prioritising state projects after receiving money for federal contracts.

Umahi said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) would be involved in recovering funds from contractors who fail to execute projects. He added that civil society organisations and student groups would also participate in increased monitoring and site inspections.

The minister said the government had rescoped and re-phased several projects to improve execution, stressing that contractors who had received funds must deploy them to the sites. He said the government would also not allow political connections to shield contractors from their contractual responsibilities.
