The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has commended the pilot of the Nigerian Air Force aircraft that crashed in Ondo State, saying his actions may have prevented a greater disaster in the community.
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, crashed in a swampy area near the Naval Base in Igbokoda on Monday, October 5, while on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos. All 25 people on board, including five crew members and 20 passengers, were confirmed dead.
Odidiomo said the aircraft could have caused greater devastation if it had crashed within the town. He said residents were the first to reach the difficult-to-access crash site and subsequently guided security agencies to the location.
The monarch said recovery efforts had been challenging because of the swampy terrain, but the community remained willing to support authorities in retrieving the aircraft wreckage and any remaining victims. President Bola Tinubu had declared three days of national mourning over the crash and ordered an investigation into its cause.
