The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced the 100-day countdown to the 2027 general elections, with Lagos State recording the highest number of registered voters at 7,488,633.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Tuesday during a world press conference in Abuja, where he said the total number of registered voters ahead of the elections stood at 103,428,715.
Kano followed Lagos with 6,570,276 registered voters, while Kaduna had 4,662,640. Katsina recorded 3,876,051, followed by Rivers with 3,736,434 and Oyo with 3,588,111 registered voters.
By geopolitical zones, the North-West had the highest number of registered voters with 25,083,411, followed by the South-West with 19,614,274 and the North-Central with 16,965,787. The South-South recorded 15,823,550, the North-East 13,965,475, while the South-East had 11,976,218.
INEC said the voter register would be displayed nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, to allow eligible voters to verify their details and raise objections where necessary.
Amupitan also disclosed that the commission had established an Artificial Intelligence Division to help detect anomalies in election results and combat misinformation, including deepfakes and AI-generated content. He said AI auditing tools had been integrated into the results verification process, with human oversight maintained.
The commission is also upgrading its Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices and plans to deploy 57,000 newly procured BVAS machines for the elections. A nationwide mock accreditation exercise is expected to hold in November.
INEC said it would engage 1,414,768 ad hoc personnel for the two phases of the elections, with 707,384 personnel to be deployed for each phase. The personnel will cover 176,846 polling units across the country.
The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
