Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise peace, unity and justice as the country approaches another electoral season.
Jonathan made the call in an Independence Day message posted on his X platform on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary.
He said Nigeria had faced numerous challenges since gaining independence in 1960 but had continued to overcome them through the resilience of its people.
Jonathan said the forthcoming electoral season would test the country’s democratic maturity and urged Nigerians to act in ways that would safeguard peace, unity and justice.
He also said Nigeria had significant opportunities for sustainable development if its diversity and abundant human and natural resources were properly harnessed.
The former president called on young Nigerians and other citizens to remain hopeful and courageous while contributing to the development of the country.
Jonathan also urged leaders at all levels to demonstrate greater responsibility and patriotism, stressing the need for good governance, accountability, personal sacrifice and adherence to the rule of law.
He said Nigerians must show greater commitment to national service in order to build a peaceful, secure and equitable nation for present and future generations.
