The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has ordered filling stations nationwide to calibrate and verify their fuel dispensing equipment to prevent under-dispensing.
The regulator warned that stations found giving motorists less petrol than the quantity paid for could face sanctions, including revocation of their operating licences.
The directive followed enforcement operations in which several stations were sealed for short-measuring customers. About 20 filling stations were reportedly sealed between 2025 and 2026 over under-dispensing.
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria have directed their members to check their dispensing equipment and ensure motorists receive the quantity of fuel they pay for.
The NMDPRA also advised filling station operators to correct any faults promptly, while motorists were encouraged to monitor the quantity displayed on fuel pumps and request receipts after purchases.
