Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
United took control early in the match but Brighton fought back through Pascal Gross and other second-half goals to complete the comeback and advance to the next round.
The defeat marked the first time in 145 attempts that Manchester United had lost at Old Trafford after taking a two-goal lead.
It was also the first time in 50 years that an opposition side had won at Old Trafford after trailing 2-0. United had previously gone 551 matches at home without losing after holding a half-time lead.
Manager Michael Carrick made nine changes to his starting line-up, while Brighton made six changes. However, the visitors were able to match United physically and capitalise on defensive mistakes.
United’s young centre-backs, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, came under criticism for their roles in Brighton’s comeback, particularly during the second and third goals.
The result adds to a difficult start for Carrick, with United recording just one win in their opening four Premier League matches. The club’s next fixture is an away match against Fulham on Sunday.
The defeat has increased scrutiny around Carrick, with the international break following the Fulham game potentially providing a period for the club to assess its position.
