Two-week repair works on the Kara Bridge have triggered heavy traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, leaving motorists stranded for hours.

The Federal Government commenced the replacement of damaged expansion joints on Tuesday, September 8, with the repairs expected to continue until September 22, 2026.

The resulting gridlock has stretched from the Kara Bridge in Ogun State towards the 7Up Junction and other parts of Lagos, affecting motorists travelling in both directions.

Traffic and security agencies, including the police, military, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Federal Road Safety Corps and Ogun State traffic officials, have been deployed to manage the situation.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, appealed to motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials.

Akinbiyi advised motorists without essential business along the route to avoid the corridor during the repair period.

The rehabilitation, directed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, is aimed at replacing deteriorating expansion joints, improving road safety and preserving the structural integrity of the bridge.

The Lagos State Government said one half of the affected section would be closed at a time, while traffic would be managed on the other half.

Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead and cooperate with traffic managers to minimise delays and ensure the repairs are completed as scheduled.
