Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have maintained their presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections despite ongoing efforts by opposition groups to produce a consensus candidate.
The G-100 Alliance, a coalition of opposition political groups and stakeholders, is working towards selecting a single presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A member of the group, Ambassador Umanu Elijah, said consultations were ongoing and expressed confidence that a consensus candidate would be agreed upon by September 30.
However, the camps of Atiku, Obi and Makinde have shown no indication that their candidates are prepared to withdraw from the race.
An ally of Atiku said the former Vice-President remained open to discussions but would contest the 2027 election.
The Allied Peoples’ Movement also confirmed that Makinde remained in the race and was contesting to win, adding that he could still emerge as the consensus candidate.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress said it was open to discussions on a single opposition candidate, while maintaining that Obi remained a strong contender for the position.
Meanwhile, some other opposition parties have rejected the single-candidate arrangement. African Action Congress candidate Omoyele Sowore said he would not step down without a shared ideology and clear development agenda.
The Democratic Leadership Alliance and Action Democratic Party also said their presidential candidates would not withdraw from the race.
The disagreement could further complicate efforts by opposition parties to unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
