Nepal Mourns 1,398 Flood Victims as Rescue Efforts Continue

Nepal has declared a national day of mourning for victims of the devastating glacial floods that struck the country on August 26.

The disaster has killed at least 1,398 people, while more than 5,500 others are reported missing, including hundreds of hydropower workers.

Flags were flown at half-mast across the country on Monday, while candlelight vigils and prayer sessions were held to honour the victims.

Rescue operations are continuing, particularly in areas where workers are believed to be trapped inside hydropower tunnels. The rescue of three workers in recent days has raised hopes that more survivors could still be found.

Nepali rescue teams are being supported by foreign experts from countries including China, India and South Korea.

The floods destroyed homes, roads and entire communities, leaving thousands of people displaced.

The disaster agency said 1,355 bodies had been recovered, while about 4,996 people remained missing as of Monday.

The Nepalese government has begun relief and recovery efforts, with reconstruction expected to cost billions of dollars.
