The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has announced the revival and retraining of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), popularly known as MOPOL, to strengthen the fight against kidnapping, banditry and other high-risk crimes.
Disu said the force’s mobile units, particularly those in the Northeast, had returned to training after years of inadequate equipment and limited exposure to modern counter-insurgency tactics.
He described MOPOL as the “fighting arm” of the Nigeria Police, saying its officers were specially trained to handle demanding security operations.
The IGP disclosed that experienced retired MOPOL personnel had also voluntarily returned to training camps to share their knowledge and experience with younger officers.
According to him, the move is expected to boost the capacity of the police to complement the military in tackling insurgency, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
Disu also called for stronger border security, including the use of aerial surveillance and technology-driven monitoring, to prevent criminal groups from exploiting Nigeria’s porous borders.
He said the police were also developing a centralised biometric and criminal database that would be shared with other security agencies to improve crime detection and intelligence gathering.
On kidnapping, Disu said the police were working with telecommunications companies to tackle the use of pre-registered SIM cards by criminals and improve intelligence sharing.
He urged Nigerians to support the police by providing useful information about criminal activities, stressing that community cooperation was essential to effective policing.
The IGP also assured police officers that welfare remained a priority, disclosing that a review of the police salary structure had been completed and was awaiting presidential approval.
He added that efforts were underway to improve accommodation, uniforms and other essential facilities for personnel.
Disu further warned against jungle justice, describing mob killings as murder and urging Nigerians to hand suspected criminals over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution.
