Human rights lawyer and former lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has urged residents of the South-East to reject any directive to boycott the 2027 general elections.
Ejiofor’s call follows an ultimatum issued by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, asking the Federal Government to ensure the hearing of Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal against his conviction and life sentence, or face an electoral boycott across the South-East and other parts of Biafraland.
In a statement on Thursday, Ejiofor described an election boycott as potentially harmful to the region, warning that it could weaken the people’s political influence and worsen the economic and social challenges facing the South-East.
He urged residents to pursue their grievances through constitutional, judicial, political and democratic channels rather than withdrawing from the electoral process.
Ejiofor said political participation should not be portrayed as an offence against the interests of the people, stressing that the region had suffered enough from past conflicts and should not reopen old wounds.
He called on Igbo leaders and residents to protect peace, strengthen democratic institutions and use legitimate means to pursue justice and political objectives.
Ejiofor maintained that patriotism should not require people to sacrifice their livelihoods or political voice, urging the people of the South-East not to allow the region to become collateral damage in political struggles.
