The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has inaugurated a presidential committee on the National Threat Assessment and Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan, charging members to work with professionalism, urgency and patriotism.

The committee, established by President Bola Tinubu, has 90 days to produce a comprehensive national threat assessment and a five-year defence operations plan for the President’s consideration.

Akume said the assessment should identify Nigeria’s major security threats, their likely evolution and the appropriate responses, while the five-year plan would translate the findings into operational priorities and capability requirements.

He said the plan would guide decisions on equipment, intelligence, infrastructure, training, procurement and other defence needs, with annual reviews to respond to emerging threats.

The committee will review existing and emerging security threats, identify capability gaps and establish priorities and timelines for addressing them.

The committee will be coordinated by the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (retd.). Famadewa said subcommittees would be created to handle specialised areas and help meet the 90-day deadline.
