The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, will today inspect flood-prone areas in Maitama and ongoing infrastructure projects along the Southern Parkway and ISEX corridor.

The inspection follows Saturday’s flooding in parts of Abuja after heavy rainfall.

Wike is expected to assess the extent of the flooding in Maitama and identify measures to prevent a recurrence before proceeding to inspect ongoing projects.

His Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, defended the FCT Administration’s handling of the flooding, saying flooding in parts of Abuja predates Wike’s tenure.

Olayinka said the FCT Administration was reviewing the 1979 Abuja Master Plan to reflect the city’s expansion and improve drainage infrastructure.

He also blamed poor waste management and the removal of drainage covers by scavengers for worsening flooding in some areas.

Olayinka said the long-term solution includes improved drainage, proper waste management and stricter enforcement of development regulations.
